HOW TO LOOK AFTER WAXED CANVAS
Waxed canvas is made to change.
Unlike a standard canvas fabric, the surface is treated with wax, giving it a distinctive texture, water resistance and the ability to develop character with wear. Creases, scuffs, lighter marks and changes in tone will naturally build up over time. They’re part of how the fabric is designed to age.
That said, waxed canvas does need a little care from time to time. If you've noticed white streaks appearing after your jacket, cap or other waxed piece has been caught in the rain, there’s usually no need to worry. Here's how to look after it.
WHITE STREAKS AFTER RAIN
One of the things you might notice with heavier waxed canvas is a series of lighter or white streaks appearing across the fabric after it gets wet.
This happens as the wax moves around within the fabric. Water, friction and movement can disturb the wax coating, causing it to gather or become more visible in certain areas. It can be particularly noticeable on heavier waxed pieces, where there is more wax within the fabric.
The good news? It’s easy to sort.
GET THE HAIRDRYER OUT
A little gentle heat is usually all that's needed.
Start by making sure the piece is dry, then use a hairdryer on a warm setting and hold it several inches away from the fabric. Keep the hairdryer moving rather than concentrating heat in one place.
As the wax warms up, you'll see the lighter marks begin to disappear as the wax redistributes itself through the fabric. You can gently smooth the area with a clean, soft cloth if needed.
Don't rush it. A little heat at a time is better than trying to heat the fabric quickly.
Using gentle heat to redistribute wax is a commonly recommended method for reducing lighter marks and evening out the finish.
WHEN THE MARKS ARE PART OF THE POINT
Not every mark needs removing.
As waxed canvas is worn, the wax moves with the fabric. Folding, creasing, rubbing and everyday use can create lighter areas, darker patches and visible creases. Over time, these build into a natural patina unique to the way you wear the piece.
Think of it as the fabric keeping a record of where it's been.
So if your waxed jacket has developed a few creases, your cap has picked up some marks or the colour has started to change in areas of wear, that's not necessarily something to fix. It's the character of the fabric coming through.
Waxed canvas is designed to age this way.
KEEP IT CLEAN
For everyday dirt, keep things simple.
Let mud and dirt dry, then brush it away with a soft brush. For anything that needs a little more attention, use a clean cloth and cold water to gently spot-clean the area.
Avoid putting waxed canvas through a washing machine or using detergents and hot water. These can strip away the wax coating and change the character and performance of the fabric.
Once you've cleaned it, leave it to air dry naturally.
KEEP IT DRY WHEN YOU'RE NOT WEARING IT
Waxed canvas is made for the outdoors, but that doesn't mean it should be stored wet.
If you've been caught in the rain, let your piece dry naturally in a well-ventilated space before putting it away. Avoid putting it straight onto a radiator or applying intense direct heat.
Once it's completely dry, store it somewhere cool and dry, ready for the next outing.
WHEN DOES IT NEED RE-WAXING?
Eventually, the wax will start to wear down, particularly around high-friction areas.
Rather than re-waxing just because the piece has developed some marks, look at how the fabric is behaving. If water that previously beaded on the surface starts soaking into the canvas, or areas begin to feel noticeably dry, it may be time to consider re-waxing.
Re-waxing isn't something you need to do regularly. The whole point of waxed canvas is that it can develop its own character before it needs any serious maintenance.
BUILT TO CHANGE
The best thing about waxed canvas is that it doesn't stay looking brand new.
The creases from being folded. The marks from getting caught in the rain. The areas that have softened through wear. The changes in colour and texture that happen over time.
They're all part of the story.
So don't worry about keeping your waxed pieces pristine. Wear them, get them outside and let them change. And when the wax needs a little attention, a brush, some cold water and a little gentle heat should be enough to keep them going.
