Meet the women who are doing what they love, not what they're told.
BRIANA KING
SKATEBOARDER, LA/ NEW YORK
P&Co: Tell us a bit about yourself, when did you start skating?
Briana: I grew up in Los Angeles where skateboarding all started, so it's a bit odd if you never stepped foot on a board living in LA. I got my first skateboard when I was 11 and broke my ankle a couple of months later so my mom made me stop skateboarding. I had always played around on boards when they were around but I never felt comfortable until I ran into a girl when I was 24 years old in NYC, who reintroduced me to skating. P&Co: We've noticed you take part in a lot of girl & LGBT skate sessions, why is do you think events like this are important?
Briana: Skateboarding turned my entire life upside down. Before skateboarding I couldn't ever have dreamt of the day where I felt comfortable in my own skin. This space, that me and other non-traditional skaters have created, has done the same thing for so many other people. We've been able to grow from something so small and apply it to the rest of our lives. P&Co: Have you ever faced any challenges as a woman in the skate scene?
I make sure to block out anything that is negative. I'm creating an army of non-traditional skaters and our movement speaks for itself. I am much too sensitive to put any sort of energy into this negativity around being a women. Ignoring the negativity has been working out well for me, you can scroll through my page and see almost no hate, but if you go through other Instagrams where they have posted my videos the comment section is so negative. They could easily come to my page and continue to hate but for some reason they don't and I couldn't be any more grateful for this. P&Co: What are you doing when you're not on the deck?
Briana: I'm on tour at the moment so a lot of my life is travelling and meeting all my internet friends is real life- it's the best. After my US tour I'll be doing a AUS/NZ tour so it's taking up a lot of my free time. P&Co: How do you feel about being a part of our campaign?
Briana: Besides y'all being fucking rad. Recording the voice over and speaking out loud about doing what you love, being free, and being authentic it made me realise so much more about myself and how special I am. I can forget about these things sometimes when I'm always on the go and thinking about how others feel. I can always look back at this campaign and remember those things when I forget to take a moment for myself. ANDDD I got to work with my best friend!!*
