It would be wrong if we didn’t release a new jacket or two with our winter collection, after all when are you going to appreciate a full berber lined jacket more than on those blustery rides through mountainous roads and pathways?
The Wild Ones Ripstop Bomber is a new style for P&Co, but there’s nothing new about the classic bomber shape. As with many of our
outerwear designs, the bomber is massively influenced by military history. The first recognisable version was established during the 1940’s when the advancing technology of the time meant that the cockpits of fighter planes were becoming overcrowded and cramped. Pilots needed a jacket that was effective in combatting the elements, but one that did not get in the way of operations.
Waterproof Nylon replaced heavyweight leather and woollen collars replaced fur- which often prevented parachute function.
By the 1950’s the MA-1 Bomber, the style we are most familiar with today, had been established with its rib knit collar and army green colour. The functionality of the jacket meant that it wasn't long before it had made its way into civilian life as part of police uniforms and as a practical garment that would last from autumn through to spring. New colours began to emerge and the jacket was later adopted by youth subculture groups such as the British ‘Punks’ and ‘Skinheads’, and was popularised by Hollywood actors- most iconically by Steve McQueen in The Hunter (1980).
Our Ripstop version has taken many concepts from the original MA-1 Bomber including the ribbed collar, the ‘pen’ zip pocket on the outer arm (as well as an interior pocket), and the timeless shape. But, as ever what really makes it stand alone is the embroidered back piece featuring the new ‘Provision Tiger’ and our iconic ‘Wild Ones Never Die’ tagline.
