IN CONVERSATION WITH

SEYE ADELEKAN

Following the first leg of their Mountain Tour, Gorillaz’ bassist and all-round music maker @seyemusic visited our London store to film episode two of our new YouTube series, Notes. We’d chatted with Seye a couple of times via DM, we loved his style (and his sound, obviously), and felt like a lot of our brand values aligned with his own. We knew we needed to get him on that sofa and get to know him a bit better.

From playing his first shows in a converted public toilet in Tunbridge Wells at 15 to performing for crowds of 70,000 at festivals and around the world, Seye’s journey has taken him a long way- but his appreciation for where it all started hasn’t changed.

“I still just can’t believe that I get to play music for a living,” he says. “I'm still playing with my friends and I'm still getting to do something unbelievable.”

For Seye, there’s no shortcut to getting there. The smaller shows and the people around you all play a part.

“I like to say life is a team sport a lot,” he explains. “I don't think that many things of value are done in a vacuum. You need people and you need to connect to people. You need support.”

For Seye, it’s clear that the people around him are just as important as the music itself. During our conversation with Spitalfields store manager Abbie, we touched on collaboration, supporting the next generation of musicians and the importance of staying human in an increasingly digital world.

Outside of the interview, we tried on some new fits, went vinyl shopping and carried the conversation over lunch. It was one of those days that felt less like an interview and more like spending time with a genuinely great guy.

“I don't think that many things of value are done in a vacuum. You need people and you need to connect to people. You need support.”

Our conversation with Seye is the second episode of Notes, our ongoing series sitting down with the creatives, musicians and people we admire to talk about their work, influences and the stories behind what they do.
