Meet photographer Jack Antal, the man behind the lens at our Spring '20 lookbook shoot. Introduce yourself!
Hey! So I'm a 25 year old photographer, surfer, and good-times-seeker from San Diego, California. I was lucky enough to grow up here, go to college here, and now live and work here. It's an incredibly special place to me and has shaped much of who I am today. I'm a person who thrives off quality time spent doing the things I am most passionate about with the amazing people that I am surrounded by on a daily basis. This almost always boils down to surfing, photography, weekend trips with friends, and just soaking up every day that I get to spend doing these things... that's what I'm all about, I'm a pretty simple guy.

How would you describe your photography style?
This is a tough one. My photography is really all over the place in that I love shooting a wide range of 'styles'. Lifestyle, landscape, abstract, portrait, texture, travel... I don't really focus too much on one thing because I genuinely enjoy all of it. Rather, I focus on applying my personal touch on whatever kind of photo I end up taking. I certainly aim for more of a moody, raw, rough around the edges, and selectively colourful output with my photos and when it all comes together, there's no more ecstatic feeling for me. I think my approach is quite contrary to what most photographers do, but it’s how I find some of my most pure passion and enjoyment. What drives your creativity?
The main thing that drives my creativity is my passion. It's hard to explain but I get some sort of giddy fulfilment when I produce a photo that I'm really proud of. I just have an insatiable desire to capture what's in front of my eyes in a creative way, and that's what drives me to keep doing what I do. My inspiration comes in many forms, but mainly from people who do their own art/craft for pure and authentic reasons, not looking to impress or seek approval from anyone else -and you know those people when you see them, they're powerfully inspiring.

How did the Spring shoot go, any memorable moments?
The spring shoot was a ton of fun. None of us really knew each other before this shoot, so it was great getting to know Alice and Grant while working on a cool project like this one. It was basically a journey all through the Palm Springs/Yucca Valley/Amboy area, which is really beautiful and has a few strange aspects to it like salt flats, ghost towns, and even a crater. Amboy itself was quite a unique location to shoot. There's not much there besides the infamous Roy's sign, the rusty old gas pumps (that still work), a post office, and deserted, run down buildings which made for some cool photos. Sunset was definitely memorable for us when we were shooting with the Buick. I had Grant and Alice in t-shirts for about an hour and a half while it was freezing cold and extremely windy. It wasn't pleasant for any of us but they did a great job and I'm really pleased with how the photos turned out. Did you have a favourite piece from the Spring collection?
Yeah I've got to say, the black 'Whiskey pleases me' shirt was a favourite as soon as I saw it. I'm a sucker for a good old fashioned, so that one hit home for sure haha.

Which is your go-to camera?
My go to camera is my trusty Canon 6D. I bought it off another photographer when I was interning at Transworld Snowboarding during college about 5 years ago. It was my first Canon and that thing has never let me down, it's been an absolute gem throughout the years. It has been all around the world with me through rain, snow, dirt, sand, mud, plenty of in-depth TSA examinations, and everywhere in between. Nothing fancy, but I do love that camera and it goes essentially everywhere with me. What are you doing when you’re not shooting?
Outside of work, I spend a lot of time in and around the ocean. Surfing is one of the biggest parts of my life so I do a lot of that and also love spending time at the beach with friends. Other interests of mine include music, plants, tattoos, printed photo work, travel, and my cats.

Is there one project or shot you are particularly proud of?
Yeah I'd have to say my favourite project was actually a personal one. As a huge fan of print, I had always wanted to make a photo book full of my best photos from the past six years or so, and last fall I finally did. It's called Head Down Heart Up and it's a collection of my most favourite images that I have taken, paired with a few snippets of writing about some things that have really influenced my life. I've never felt so passionately fulfilled creatively as I did making that book, so that project was very special to me. One of my favourites from the book is a photo of my buddy Tom at Oceanside Harbour. They were doing some dredging one day in late October as they do a few times per year. He happened to be one of the only people out and I actually didn't have my camera on me. I saw Tom surfing, saw the dredger, saw the potential photo, and immediately hustled home to grab my camera so I could try and put it all together. Discover the Lookbook
