On a recent trip to Hong Kong, in between the skateparks, factory visits & the hurricane... we dropped into ’The Company Tattoo’ studio to visit one of our favourite tattoo artists- Dave Ryo Lau. We’ve followed Dave on Instagram for while, and Jordan & Ross from the production team, made it their mission to get tattooed by the man himself.
The Company Tattoo overlooks Nathan Road in Hong Kong- one of the most affluent streets in China. The studio itself is a step away from the heavily commercial vibe of the area- with concrete floors, brick walls, and framed original artwork & prints covering any blank space, there is a real old-school industrial feel to the place. One thing that stood out was the ‘gun wall’ displaying what we first thought were a ton of air rifles & shot guns, but luckily for us just turned out to be models.
Lau’s work is very much based on traditional styles but you can still see the clear Chinese cultural influence in some designs; with custom designs, bold lines & strong black and colour work. Our guys opted for a ‘traditional junk ship’ and a ‘mermaid’ tattoo- and in between sittings got stuck into some local delicacies. Dave’s recommendations.
Thanks to Dave & the whole team at ‘The Company Tattoo’ for having us- and for the rad tee! We’ll be back soon without a doubt.
